Two days ago, I officially completed everything I needed to do to get my license when I turn 16 in a year. Now, you must be wondering why I’m telling you this, right? Well, let me backtrack for a second.
Two days ago, I took (and passed) both my knowledge and driving tests. On the same day. I went to my driving school to take the knowledge test. After about 25 minutes of checking and rechecking my answers, I finally turned it in. I passed!
From there, I went to the front desk to book my driving test, hoping they had availability in the next week or so. Sadly, they didn’t. However, the lady at the front desk reassuringly told me to call back every few days to see if there was a cancellation.
My ride was five minutes away, so I sat down and waited. Within this short period, an instructor - who happened to be my favorite - had a cancellation. And this is how the situation went.
“What happened? Did the student cancel?” The lady asked the instructor.
“Yep.”
“Well, how do you feel about doing a driving test now?” she wondered.
“Sounds great to me,” he cheered.
“Great,” she paused, turning her head to me. “Hey, you. How do you feel about doing your driving test right now?”
“Uhh, sure,” I decided.
Feeling ready and confident enough with my skills, I went through the test, and… PASSED! As someone who loves driving, I felt so relieved and satisfied to have been done with everything, and that too, all in one shot.
As I reflect on that day, I realize something crucially important: opportunities come and go just like that. Boom, they’re gone.
If you’re able to seize the opportunity when it comes your way, kudos to you. Because having the self-desire, and then actually pushing through and getting there requires a lot of discipline and self-confidence.
There are times when the weight of big decisions is stressful, and sometimes even scary. But the weight of the regrets of not jumping on that chance is lifelong, and you may never get a second chance at it. Ultimately, in the end, it’s your choice, but think about the one question: will this matter 10 years from now?
And if the answer is yes, then why not?
Go for it.
