Does it nag in your mind day in and day out? That one thing. Does it make you question everything you’ve ever stood for? That one thing. Does it hurt your well-being? That one thing.
Then, it doesn’t matter. At all.
Whatever this one thing may be, if you answered “yes” to any of the previous questions, that one thing doesn’t deserve your attention, time, or energy. That one thing doesn’t understand your worth and how important you are. That one thing doesn’t understand how caring and giving you are to keep up with it for this long. That one thing does not matter.
There’s always that one thing that we just can’t let go of. We can’t let go because we still care. We can’t let go because no matter how much it hurt us, it’s just who we are. And we will continue to get hurt by that one thing as long as it’s there.
So, why can’t we let go? Why can’t we let go of that one thing that makes us want to cry and pull our hair out?
I don’t know.
But I do know that we’re too valuable, too important, and too forgiving to keep letting that one thing bother us. It doesn’t deserve us.
We have so much more to look for in our lives: ourselves, our loved ones, our hobbies, and passions, our favorite books, and of course, ice cream. We just have to turn our heads away. We just have to pluck the little synapse of that one thing and store it in a bottle somewhere away from us. But that’s not easy, and I know it’s not.
For the last and final time, please take my word for it, you are far too special to let that one thing take you down. You’re beautiful. You’re precious. You’re loved and important, even if it doesn’t seem like it at the moment.
Say this to yourself:
I love myself. I am loved. I deserve the best.
And I won’t settle for anything less.
This article is in honor of National Suicide Prevention Month - September. It’s dedicated to everyone who has that one thing or those million things that make them feel less than who they are. You’re here for a reason, and that one thing doesn’t deserve to take away that reason. My heart goes out to anyone who has struggled with these thoughts, who lost someone from these thoughts, who is currently struggling from these thoughts, who is facing a mental health stigma, or who feels like they’re alone or are a burden. You’re loved. You’re not alone. And you’re not ever a burden. 💜💛
