“Yeah right. Like that could ever happen.” She pity-laughed.
“Ha! Good joke.” He brushed it off.
“I doubt it. Seriously, nothing big is going to happen anyway.” They rolled their eyes.
There is only one thing that I want to say to each of these people:
“You’re wrong.”
The one similarity between all of these people’s responses is their mindset. You see, going into a tournament, competition, convention, or the like thinking that you aren’t about to perform well is asking for it to come true.
When you think about it, your mindset is determined by how you felt leading up to the occasion, right? Now, I’m not about to tell you to “keep your head up” or “think positive” because even I won’t believe that.
A good mindset is determined by good feelings, which arise from proper preparation and hard work. One thing leads to another. If you complete all of these, chances are you will do well.
I’m often asked the question of how I come up with my article ideas. Well, this specific article is dedicated to one of my readers: an upcoming, and soon-to-be, extremely successful gymnast. I got the idea to write this article when we had the following conversation:
Her: I’m preparing for a gymnastics event where college scouts will be looking at me.
Me: That’s awesome!!! College scouts at 15 years old?! You go, girl!
Her: Haha, thanks! I doubt they’ll be looking at me though.
Me: But that’s still awesome! Good luck :)
My brain: I’M SO PROUD OF YOU OMG!!!
There are two key points in this discussion: “I’m preparing for…” and “I doubt they’ll…”. My friend already had one of the aforementioned steps down - preparation. Her next step should’ve been to keep the adrenaline going and to let it fuel her confidence. Regardless of what may have happened though, the very fact that there were college scouts at the event was a huge success already. And I’m so proud of her.
Sometimes the right mindset may not come until the very second before the event begins. Sometimes it may be difficult to look at the positive side or be confident regardless of the amount of preparation. And sometimes, no matter what, the right mindset just won’t be there.
But (there’s always a “but” with me 😁) maybe remembering the instances where you had a proper mindset and succeeded because of it could trigger a change. Who knows? All you may need is a little flip of a switch to make it all shine.
Just say:
“I can.”
And think:
What is my “I Can” moment?
