The polished-green grass prickled at my skin as a bright light shot at my eyes. Rubbing them open, the vast sky, abundant with shades of blue and stripped of marshmallow clouds, faced me, home to the blindingly bright sun. Laughter sang through my ears and the feeling of memories being made filled me up to my heart’s content. A ladybug flew onto my arm, its striking red and black colors crawling towards my index finger.
“Hi, little one,” I said in a baby voice. “How we doing?”
But it flew away. A shred of relaxation settled on me. A little glimmer of hope rising through my heart. A bright smile crept its way up my face, and I felt… happy. Genuinely. I inhaled deeply, smelling fertilizer and a vanilla cream scent - Hope’s perfume. Her voice, angelic and soft, rang in my ears as I shot towards her.
“Hope! It’s me, come here!” I shouted, but she didn’t even turn her head. “Hope? Hope, can you hear me?” I tried again.
As I reached for her, she drifted away, leaving only colorful particles behind.
“Where are you going, Hope?” I asked. “Why are you leaving me?” I called.
A gleam of light rose behind Hope as she was sucked in from behind. A cackle filled the air. The particles that Hope left behind turned from pink, orange, and yellow to gray, black, and white. The sky looked like it had gone to the dark side and back, ashes for clouds. All the gorgeous plants fell to the ground, slouching and brittle. The laughter turned to cries of help and the memories turned into regrets.
It was dark, and I was left behind. Shivers went down my spine as a pang of queasiness swam through my stomach.“Hope! Help me, please, help me!” I called. But I received no response. My voice faded in the distance, as even I was taken down.
Broken.
